[ Summary ] Lipomas of the colon, with non-epithelial tumors are very commonly seen. However, liposarcoma is very rare.
A lipoma is a soft submucosal tumor which has a flat, pedunculated form and yellowish color. They are visualized as soft submucosal tumors with barium enema X-ray examinations. Lipomas are often due to invagination are there can be factors associated, such as crab claw-like findings or a coiled spring shapes.
There may be squeeze signs, cushion signs and naked fat signs seen with an endoscope.
Ultrasonography may reveal a mass of uniform density in the submucosal layer.
Limpomas exhibit low fat density, as seen in CT scans. Iso intensity in T2 scanning and high intensity T1 is emphasised with MRI.
Inflammation, erosions and ulcers may be produced on the surface due to circulatory disturbances. Redness may be observed, when there has been repeated invagination of the intestines. Epithelial tumors may be present and diagnosis may become difficult.
Most lipomas are asymptomatic, but may be inferred through symptoms such as hemorrhaging, obstructions, of the bowel or abdominal pain.
Excision by endoscopical polypectomy or open surgery may be performed.
Two cases with large sigmoid colon lipomas, observed in this institution, are reporte.
