| [ Summary ] |
Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) techniques, were developed for the en bloc resection of early gastric cancer. They have been used for treatment of colorectal epithelial neoplasms in Japan because there are many colorectal neoplasms which can not be resected en bloc with endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). ESD techniques are thought to present some problems, namely a high risk of perforation because of very thin colorectal walls, and a high risk of serious peritonitis in the event of perforation. However, this technique is very useful for patients who have large colorectal neoplasms or non-lifting intraepithelial neoplasms because it is possible to precisely evaluate these lesions histopathologically, and judge whether patients should undergo additional surgery or not. Therefore it is necessary to learn accurate ESD techniques to perform them safely. |
