Indications and contraindication for percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) are well established. However, ethical considerations, particularly those based on patients view point, have not been sufficiently discussed. When considering the role of PEG in nutritional management, ethical aspects are important as well as indications and contraindications for gastrostomy as well as indications for long-term enteral nutrition. Attention should also, be paid to prevention of sarcopenia (loss of muscle) and early detection of trace element deficiency. We describe the role of PEG in nutritional management while considering the above issues. |
