| [ Summary ] | In our hospital, colonoscopy is usually performed without sedation. It is generally said that the patients undergoing colonoscopy have a great deal of pain. However, we think that degree of the pain patients feel depends on the techniques used for colonoscopic insertion. Stretching the colon results in a great deal of pain. The most important factor concerning insertion techniques is maintaining proper scopic axis. Adherence to this principle results in painless insertion. Colonoscopists mastery of this technique is important to perform colonoscopy without sedation. The advantages cited for sedationless colonoscopy are that serious cardiorespiratory complications associated with sedation can potentially be avoided and sedationless colonoscopy increases the motivation of colonoscopists to improve their insertion techniques. Sedationless colonoscopy is possible if colonoscopists know proper techniques for colonoscopic insertion. The colonoscopists must keep this in mind. |
