[ Summary ] Gastrointestinal (GI) lymphomas are the most common extra nodal lymphomas, accounting for about 50 percent of such tumors. They may be of the B- or T-cell type. Primary GI Hodgkin lymphoma is extremely rare. Most low grade GI lymphomas of the B-cell type are MALT lymphomas ; extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue. Other GI B-cell lymphomas include mantle cell lymphoma, including "lymphomatous polyposis", diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBL), and Burkitt's lymphoma. Although mantle cell lymphoma is morphologically similar to MALT lymphoma, the clinical behavior is quite different. Thus, the distinction between these lymphomas, concerning the immunophenotype and genetic features is truly important. 0n the other hand, MALT lymphomas respond well to H. pylori eradication with antibiotics and have favorable prognoses. However, recent reports on these patients with MALT lymphoma treated by antibiotics have found that the presence ot increased quantities ot transformed cells implied worse prognoses. The WH0 classification committees proposed that there should be separate diagnoses for DLBL with MALT- type lymphoma, if the areas of large cell lymphom are present in the MALT site.
