[ Summary ] X-ray guided control in colonoscopic examination has been believed to be quite useful, especially for beginners, to prevent a large, complicated loop formation in the colonoscope.
Endoscope position detection unit (UPD) is a revolutionary system, using low density alternating magnetic fields to get the same effect as X-ray guides. UPD is composed of stiffness adjustable equipment and magnetic equipment, which can be used to check the image from the colonoscope itself through a liquid crystal detector during insertion. By using this device, trainees can safely release the various loop formations in the colonoscope, and manipulate various techniques accurately. Further more, trainees can study the insertion techniques of experts through observation during colonoscopic examination using UPD.
Fourteen colonoscopists, including four beginners in our hospital did colonoscopic examinations using either UPD or an ordinary colonoscope, and average times for colonoscopic examinations were examined. The average time needed by experts for the insertion of colonoscope into the cecum using UPD was prolonged in comparison with that using an ordinary colonosope. On the other hand, the average time needed for the insertion of the colonoscope into the cecum, using UPD, was shortened for beginners compared with those using an ordinary colonoscope.
In conclusion, UPD is, especially, useful for endoscopic training for beginners.
