[ Summary ] Small flat and depressed type colorectal tumors still constitute a considerable challenge for all endoscopists. Such depressed lesions have more malignant potential at an early stage than other polypoid lesions.
Therefore, we must diagnose such lesions based on several important findings such as slightly reddish mucosa, fold deformity or, changes in the vascular network. Recently, a new type of index of hemoglobin color enhancement system, that can discriminate insignificant color changes, was developed by Olympus Optical Co. (Tokyo, Japan). Color enhancement clearly delineates tumor redness and vascular networks. We examined the clinical value of an adaptive IHb color enhancement for the detection of colorectal lesions. The results of this prospective study demonstrate that an adaptive index of hemoglobin color enhancement is effective for detection of colorectal tumors. However, we believe that this system would make the number of false positive indications for colorectal lesions. It is therefore necessary to confirm the optimal enhancement level of this system for endoscopic diagnosis, in order to make the adaptive index of hemoglobin color enhancement image processing system more accurate.
