[ Summary ] |
Amoebic colitis is caused by Entamoeba histolytica. Typical symptoms are chronic abdominal pain or hematochezia. Recently, amoebic colitis is more frequently seen in HIV infected or asymptomatic individuals. Characteristic endoscopic findings are multiple ulcers occurring in the cecum and/or rectum, and the presence of redness around ulcer and a dirty white film are useful in differential diagnosis. Metronidazole is very effective against amoebic colitis. |
