[ Summary ] |
Hemangioma, lymphangioma, and lipoma of the small intestine are all benign tumors with characteristic endoscopic findings. After the widespread introduction of several types of endoscope for the small intestine such capsule endoscopy and double balloon endoscopy (DBE) endoscopic diagnosis of these tumors became easier. Diagnosis with endoscopic ultrasonography is also useful in submucosal tumor cases located in the small intestine. Since these tumors are benign, treatment must be adopted only in cases with clinical symptoms. Most cases with small tumors exhibit no symptoms. However, sometimes serious symptoms occur such as intestinal bleeding, ileus, and invagination. Appropriate treatment is required in such cases. At this time, it is possible to perform several endoscopic treatments with DBE such as hemostasis and endoscopic mucosal resection. However, there is a higher risk of complications than with usual endoscopic treatments. Therefore, careful choice of treatment is necessary. We describe the characteristics, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of individual types of tumors. |
