[ Summary ] | Depressed type cancers (O-IIc) were considered to be phantom carcinomas or local diseases by western endoscopists. However, this type of cancer has recently been proven to exist due to the efforts of Kudo and Fujii et al. This report is concerned with typical 0-IIc cancers and discusses their endoscopic and clinicopathological features. The incidence, location, the rates of cancer, and SM invasion rate of depressed cancers in relation to tumor size were examined. The incidence of depressed lesions was considered to be low in the early stages but increased according to level of tumor invasion. Furthermore, IIc lesions have higher rates of cancer and SM invasion even when they are of smaller size compared to protruded type lesions. IIc lesions are, therefore, clinically very important and should be payed special attention, in order to detect depressed type lesions. In order to improve detection rates for depressed cancer, new modalities, such as Narrow Band Imaging and Autofluorescence Imaging are required. |
