[ Summary ] |
Since Crohn's disease requires periodic intestinal observations over long periods, patient receptivity of examinations is crucial. Additionally, with the broadening use of endoscopic balloon dilation, information is needed to judge whether treatment with this technique is indicated. It may be used for conditions such as longitudinal ulcers or fistula beyond stenotic areas, where the insertion of an endoscope is impossible. With these conditions, use of multidetector-row CT (MDCT) technology has become viable. The usability of virtual endoscopy in respect to Crohn's disease has been found to produce favorable results. In respect to Crohn's disease, it is difficult for virtual endoscopy to surpass the detection ability of endoscopic examination, except for observation of extraintestinal lesions or sites where endoscopic examination is impossible. However, virtual endoscopy can provide a great deal of useful information at the same time. In the future, a higher number of minor lesions may be examined with further advancements in high resolution MDCT. |
