[ Summary ] |
The prognosis for patients with liver metastases which have progressed from gastric cancer is dismal. However, there are many treatment modalities, with hepatectomy playing an important role in curative management of metastatic disease. Between 1991 and 2008, 83 patients with liver metastasis arising from gastric cancer were cared for in our institution. Seven of these patients (8.4 %) survived for 3 years. Five outof 7 patients received hepatectomies as the initial treatment for their hepatic tumors. The other 2 patients had systemic chemotherapy followed by liver resection. Hepatectomy may be an essential step in achieving curative outcomes in multimodal treatment of particular patients with hepatic involvement, leading to advanced gastric cancer. Further investigation of hepatectomy as a curative approach for metastatic tumors resulting from gastric cancer is warranted to clinically establish causative links. |
