[ Summary ] |
Biliary tree cancers such as carcinoma of the bile duct or gallbladder are associated with dismal prognoses. Surgical resection offers the only chance of a cure. Various factors should be considered in surgical planning for curative resection. These factors include horizontal extension of tumors such as bile duct involvement and vertical extension of tumors such as involvement of the portal vein, diffuse hepatoduodenal ligament infiltration or arterial invasion. Useful imaging information for detection and extension of tumors is now provided with isotropic voxel data from multidetector-row CT (MDCT) and postprocessing of images such as multiplanar reformation (MPR), volume rendering (VR), or MR images such as MRCPs or dynamic MRIs. |
