| [ Summary ] |
There are three indications for endoscopic pancreatic stenting. One is short-term (under one week) stenting, which may reduce the frequency of post-ERCP pancreatitis in high risk patients. The second is mid-term (under one month) stenting, which is used for pseudocysts and pancreatic abscess treatment. It is also useful for shrinking cysts. The third use is long-term stenting, which is used for patients with chronic pancreatitis and who have a stricture in the main pancreatic duct. It is also useful for pain relief. A related point is that it is most important that these patients refrain from drinking fluids. Pancreatic stents are very difficult to insert in severe strictures of the main pancreatic duct. Successful insertion can be achieved after endoscopic dilation using a dilator catheter and a balloon dilator. |
