[ Summary ] |
Cases of endoscopy-negative gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are as frequently observed in Japan, as in Western countries. GERD symptoms in patients with endoscopy-negative GERD are reported to be effectively controlled by initial and maintenance anti-secretory therapy, using H2 receptor antagonists and proton pump inhibitors. However, the efficacy of anti-secretory therapy in patients with endoscopy-negative GERD is reported to be inferior to that in patients with erosive esophagitis. The efficacy of placebo treatment has been demonstrated to be relatively high in patients with endoscopy-negative GERD. GERD symptoms in endoscopy-negative GERD patients may be caused by something besides gastro-esophageal acid reflux, and adequate therapy for patients with endoscopy-negative GERD should be investigated further. |
