| [ Summary ] |
The background mucosa of patients with fundic gland polyps is different from that of patients with hyperplastic polyps. Fundic gland polyps arise from gastric mucosa without atrophic gastritis, whereas hyperplastic polyps develop from mucosa affected by atrophic gastritis. Helicobacter pylori infection is significantly less frequent in patients with fundic gland polyps than in patients with hyperplastic polyps. Malignant transformation has never been reported in fundic gland polyps and sometimes disappear in several years. In contrast, malignant changes are observed in hyperplastic polyps, to some degree. We claim that fundic gland polyps are benign and distinct from hyperplastic polyps, which have the possibility of malignant transformation. In this paper, we described the association with Helicobacter pylori infection of the gastric mucosa, atrophic gastritis, and the incidence of malignant changes in patients with fundic gland polyps and hyperplastic polyps. |
