[ Summary ] Virtual colonoscopy (VC) has been tested as a tool for colorectal cancer screening in the United States. In most of the prospective studies, only patients at high risk for colorectal cancer were included. Although public perception is favorable towards virtual colonoscopy, the tolerance of patients towards VC is similar to that of colonoscopy. Studies to date have suggestedless cost efficacy in using VC in comparison with using colonoscopy as a screening tool for colorectal cancer. Further improvements in technology, decreases in the cost of VC and large scale clinical trials, performed on the average risk screening population, are required to further define the role of VC in screening for colorectal cancer.
