[ Summary ] Path of regional medical liaison for proximal hip fractures has started since 2006. Patients who have sustained one hip fracture have a higher risk of a second hip fracture than the general population, and most affected women receive no pharmaceutical treatment for osteoporosis. It is important to increase the rate of prescription of osteoporotic pharmacotherapy after an initial hip fracture. We need to establish a system for referral of patients with hip fractures to family doctors for the prescription of pharmaceutical treatment with the Osteoporosis Liaison Service. The challenges to prevent secondary fractures in patients with hip fractures have commenced in Japan.
