Because the Japanese population is aging rapidly, demand is expected to rise for colonoscopic examinations for the very elderly. Colonoscopy for individuals 85 years of age or older calls for different considerations than that for younger patients. This is in regard to bowel preparation method and bowel cleansing agents to be used. Candidate lesions for colonoscopic treatment, and indications for colonoscopic procedures must also be considered. This review discusses precautions and measures to be taken to ensure safe and effective colonoscopic examinations. |
