[ Summary ] |
We studied 40 cases of villous tumors of the large intestine. Villous tumors were classified in four pathological types as follows ; (1) villous adenomas, (2) villous adenomas+adenocarcinomas, (3) villous adenocarcinomas+ villous/tubulovillous adenomas, (4) villous adenocarcinomas. We inferred from pathological features that villous tumors had two pathways toward histogenesis, growth patterns, and canceration. These pathways were ; (a) villous adenocarcinomas originating from de novo carcinomas and (b) adenocarcinomas without villous patterns and/or with villous adenomas originating from adenoma-carcinoma sequences. However, cases of villous adenocarcinoma in villous adenomas or with tubulovillous adenomas were reminiscent of villous adenocarcinomas originating from adenoma-carcinoma sequences. |
