[ Summary ] |
Activated leukocytes play an important role in the manifestation and continuation of immune functional abnormalities, which are the pathological basis of inflammatory bowel disease. Therefore, this seems to be the most effective treatment method to target activated leukocytes as a treatment strategy for inflammatory bowel disease. An example of this type of therapy is leukocyte adsorption apheresis (cytapheresis). This treatment has recently been introduced to clinical practice along with immunomodulatory therapy. More recently, new approaches, such as biologics to suppress leukocyte function or other therapies which inhibit the expression and action of specific molecules, such as adhesion molecules, are increasingly applied to the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. |
