[ Summary ] In the present age of satiation, lifestyle habits, such as excess calorie intake and lack of exercise, are common. According to the trend of our times, obesity, which is caused by the increase of body weight (BMI≥25), is growing at a rapid rate. In particular, patients with obesity diseases need to reduce their body weight for medical reasons. It is important to treat patients with obesity diseases caused by their obesity. Furthermore, it is also necessary to subject them to medical intervention at an early stage. Currently, 11 health impairments are listed as the features associated with obesity diseases. Among these unhealthy conditions, glucose intolerance, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension are considered the main feature of metabolic syndrome.
Patients with metabolic syndrome have a high risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, based upon atherosclerosis. Therefore, clarification of the physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms of obesity disease and metabolic syndrome through basic science is needed, and these patients provided with adequate therapy in clinical settings.
