[ Summary ] Recent progress in supportive care in cancer enables control of the side effects of cancer chemotherapy such as nausea and vomiting, and neutropenia. However, there are no effective measures for general malaise, anorexia, and peripheral neuropathy (PN). With regard to these difficult symptoms, Kampo medicines such as hochuekkito, juzentaihoto, ninjin'yoeito, and rikkunshito have shown beneficial effects in clinical trials. Detailed history taking and physical examination provide important clues for optimal differential use of these formulas. Although goshajinkigan is somewhat effective for taxane-induced PN, there is no useful Kampo formula for platinum-induced PN. Hangeshashinto is effective for both stomatitis and diarrhea, indicating its characteristics, which can be utilized in the management of multiple symptoms with single Kampo formula.
